Understand / Ideate

Wasn't able to make it to today's class, which is pretty bad.

Looking at visual styles and treasure maps to see where we want to go. Ruby started working on the website wireframes and all that good stuff, while I will work on the poster and then the flyer. Looked at the idea of having a treasure map with the placements being very ironic or funny in contrast to illustrations that are maybe more serious? Still not too sure at the moment.

26.09.2016(INTERIM I)

Critique / Understand / Define

We put both of our ideas up for the interim presentation, which was a poster based around a penguin (and it's habit for eating plastic/feeding their babies) and one based around a treasure (trash) hunt.

What we got out of it:
Penguin - People didn't really get the concept, although they liked the line art. People mistook the metal detector for a vacuum cleaner, so there's that. Could be improved by adding the babies, more plastic, colour, change tagline, etc. I don't think it worked too well, so we will probably have to scratch this idea.

Treasure hunt - Idea was generally liked although the illustration/imagery was lacking, could use more detail, trash, treasure, have it bigger and fill the page, change the tagline, they liked the little pictures that were there like the apple, type needed to be better. In general though, I think that this idea was better, although it does require a lot of work.

Afterwards, we decided that the treasure hunt was the better idea, and locked it in. We will continue refining and coming up with better visuals for it.

Making / Ideate

From the ideas we brainstormed in/outside of class, we both made a poster each for presentation on Monday. My one wasn't too refined and was rushed, but I think it'll be fine since it's just an idea. Looking forward to seeing what everyone else has made and the thought processes behind it.

Wasn't able to make it to today's class. Continued brainstorming/researching and making more thumbnails.

Ideate

Continued drawing up thumbnail sketches from the random input list on stream and the random word inputs from the brainstorm we did in class.

Understand / Ideate

Started gathering material for our mood board, different poster and rhetoric designs, definitely need to include some patterns as well. Still not sure where we will go visually.

In class we divided up into our seperate events (over the two classrooms we had) and have a massive brainstorm about the beach clean up. Activities, themes, tangibles, intangibles, etc. It was a good experience and helped get us started with our designs. Lots of good points. We were then made to come up with concepts using random word input, out of the brainstorm we just made, and continued this until the end of the class.

Research / Understand / Critique

Outside of class, I researched our chosen topic (beach clean up) and made some quick thumbnails for critique, this time looking at two of the Simpsons characters (Lisa and Marge). I rendered two A4 designs for Thursday.

We had a lecture where we revisited the idea of mood boards and rhetoric approaches and headed upstairs to our class for presentation of our ideas and critique. Good starting point of the assignment, learning what we need to do and looking at everyone else's ideas. After that, I continued researching and drawing more thumbnail sketches.

12.09.2016

Understand / Ideate / Critique

Class started off with a koha (gift given away freely, reciprocity and exchange) which led to us learning about the topic. Assignment is to make a trans-media response (poster, flyer and website) in response to an event (beach clean up or neighbours day).

Afterwards, we had a class exercise where we took Simpsons characters and tried understanding their viewpoint on the two events and how we would sell them the idea. Worked in groups to decipher the characters and drew thumbnails of poster designs to see what could or couldn't work. Pinned them up and got feedback, which was pretty good. Allowed us to get a general idea of what we could do, as most concepts were rushed, was good to see as it allowed us to see what everyone else thought about the topic.
