What was your favourite aspect of the project?
The print side of it, mainly doing the poster (as well as the flyer) and getting everything ready for presentations. Could never wrap my head around designing the website, so didn't.

Your biggest learning?
It was a good learning experience working as a group and trying to manage my time with Ruby, although there was a lot of dead-time where we could've done a lot more work. I also liked trying to carry a style through different forms of media (from poster, to my flyer, and then to the website). Since they originally all clashed together and didn't fit well at all.

What would you change or do differently?
Even though I say this almost every assignment, I would definitely change my attitude towards going to class. I got discouraged if I didn't do any work and if that happens, I wouldn't go, which is something I have to really wrap my head around. Perhaps I would also try working more cohesively with my partner, and distributing some workload to her, so that we could both have a bigger impact on the assignment due to having different strengths and weaknesses.

Rationale

We chose to do a campaign in promoting and facilitating a beach clean up and used design as a way to promote aspects of koha. Through the use of beige colours, drawn illustrations and a emphasis on a treasure map, we were able to educate and appeal to our target audience of families with kids. They were chosen because we know that they use the beach the most, especially for family days out and on weekends away. Our concept revolves around the ironic and comedic values between trash and treasure and educates in a way to promote the idea that there is no difference, and that they should both be picked up and not forgotten on the beach. When deciding on our visual imagery, we chose to make it like a traditional map from the Golden Age of Piracy in the 17th Century which influenced the rest of our visuals, such as font, layout, illustrations and colour. Pirates always loved sailing to exotic locations and finding treasure, similar to the beaches and the rubbish of today. By giving this koha to kids, we are hoping that they’re able to make a difference to the environment.

Making / Understand

Finished up the final touches on both the poster and the flyer from the critique we received from Lee. Pretty much took all of the criticism and more regarding the two designs and changed them around so that they're a bit more clean and crisp but still rustic and treasure map/old looking. Website and mobile is getting there.
Changed a lot regarding the poster, what with all the type, lines, visuals and that good stuff, with an hour to spare as well so that I can print them off. Looking forward to presentation.

Critique / Understand / Making

Since me and Ruby missed a lot of the classes, we didn't get enough critique and were a bit behind, so Lee offered to meet up with us and discuss where we could go with the project. After showing her our design, I felt better and felt like I had the time to drastically improve the poster and flyer, even though hand-in was the next day.

What I got out of it was that I needed to:
- Tie in the flyer with my poster, so that its linked, looks the same, etc
- The visuals still clash, make some smaller or bigger, dog shit shouldn't be the main focal point
- Lines could still be changed, look a bit off? Change it around
- Need to add subtext to the poster, what's wrong, how they can help, facts, etc
- Some parts are cut off, and the white burnt out edges perhaps aren't working
- Type could be adjusted
- Names are still fine
- Add the 'Love Your Coast' logo to the poster and flyer
- Flyer doesn't look the same, text is okay, but more could be added
- Add a sustainability section, maybe a treasure hunt? Top 10 things you can find on a beach?
- Logo is a bit off on the front page, move it to the back
- Imagery isn't working, subtext is a bit weird, need to change it
- Headings also don't work, seem a bit too regal and bright?

A lot of things to change in under 24 hours, but I reckon I should be sweet.

Making

Designed the flyer on a single A4. Really wanted it to be simple and small alongside the poster, as opposed to something bigger. Also made a few changes with the poster by filling in some spaces and making it so that the characters stand out more. Made changes to the line stroke as well. Website is also getting there, but I will need to do both and poster and flyer first, so that Ruby can add a few of the elements from them into the finished website.

Making

Brainstormed and drew some ideas for illustrations that we could use in our trans-media assignment. Made it so that they were more hand drawn and rustic as opposed to straight lines and simple. Also looked at using the burn tool and making the map seem older, and have some burnt edges or burning some parts of the map.

Ideate / Making / Critique

Started coming up with concepts for the flyer and continuously looking at improving the posters visuals. Ruby has started making the website, and it's getting there, although maybe a bit simple. We will need to have the same visual style for all of them so that they tie in with each other.

Began looking at different flyer designs and how we could communicate our idea.
Wasn't able to go to class today either.

10.10.2016(INTERIM II)

Understand / Critique

I went to Interim and displayed my poster (Ruby couldn't make it), to get some feedback from the class. People thought that the message was pretty clear, and the imagery worked, although it could use a lot of refinement. They liked the place names that was scattered around, the name of it (treasure/trash hunt) and the simple illustrations of it.

The things I took out of it in how to improve my poster is to:
- Type too hand drawn, bit too busy, could be changed to be more simple, it kind of clashed
- Type blended in with the illustration and background, very hard to see
- Need more text
- Make the illustrations stand out more, but not too big or cluttered
- Background is a bit rough, maybe change it? Make it lighter?
- Look at old nautical charts and adding compasses, etc
- Sea monsters and other stuff, have more illustrations similar to a nautical map of the past
- Make some lines bolder, which ones are more important?

We will have to look at these and improve before hand in. Definitely need to get rolling and come up with concepts for the flyer as well.

Making

Haven't been to class in a few weeks as I have been busy with a lot of other stuff, don't think Ruby has either. Worked over the weekend and tried to come up with a poster and flyer concept so that I could at least go to interim and get some feedback. Ended up only coming up with a poster design, but as long as I go to class, I think it'll be fine just to get a little bit of help with where we want to go from here.
